The Bereans were people from the city of Berea in Acts 17:11. What they have become is a model for everyone. What they did is listen to the teaching of Paul the Apostle and compare it with the Scriptures to see if he was telling the truth.
If you are a Christian you should be acting like one every day. You should verify every time you are taught something or come across something that is unknown to you. When you are told that Jesus is the Messiah, you should search the Scriptures and test the truth of this claim. Unfortunately, these days, most people know little of what the Bible actually says. Most have not read it through for themselves and only sit and listen to what the pastor tells them it says. This means that people have no idea when the pastor goes off track and starts teaching his own opinion, or the political version. Or teaches that the LBGTQIA+XYZ agenda is actually approved of by the Bible (it is not). If homosexuality were ok with the Bible, and therefore God, why were Sodom and Gomorrha destroyed? Homosexual sin is just like any other sin that involves sex outside of a marriage which is defined by God as one man and one woman (Matthew 19:4-5).
If people who go to a church do not read the Bible for themselves, there is no one to keep the church on a Godly path. Even if a church has a full Elder board and Deacons to help in the church, there is no gaurantee that the teaching will be accurate or that it will be proper for salvation. If everyone in the congregation is reading their Bibles, and being a Berean, the people will demand correct teaching.
There are many churches that profess to teach from the Bible. Teaching from the Bible can look like anything that a man wants. It can be made to say anything when a verse or section is taken out of context. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). In this verse, the Methodists and others, see the justification for homosexuality. What they miss is the phrase, “in Christ Jesus.” What this means is they are not using their minds to understand what the verse says. Jesus says, “And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh (Matthew 19:4-5)?’” Is this not clear? These are Jesus’ words. When we are IN Christ, we are in Him as He is in the Father (John 14:20,17:21). To be in Christ must mean something other than the flesh of this earth, namely spirit. Spirit has no physical representation here (Matthew 22:30), and this verse does not apply to LGBTEVQX+TCB etc…
Some people see the fact that Jesus was on the middle cross as a full theology. They state that Christians should be in the middle on every issue. This is not the case. Jesus said, “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword” (Matthew 10:34). If you follow Him you will not be popular to the many followers of the enemy. Anyone who is not a follower of Jesus is a follower of the enemy (Matthew 12:30).
Many churches actually teach from the Scriptures, but not the Gospel. If they teach the Gospel, it is watered down with platitudes and none of the ickey stuff is mentioned. Stuff like, you are a sinner and you must ask God for forgiveness because of your sins. You must accept Jesus as Lord of your life. “If you love Me, obey My commandments” (John 14:15). “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (John 3:23). “For the wages of sin is death,” (John 6:23a).
The Gospel includes the fact that we were all born sinners and need a savior. Jesus died on the cross to pay for those sins, and we must accept the gift of that death. Then believe in our hearts that God has raised Him from the dead, and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord.
When we act like a Berean, we are sure to keep our teachers accurate in what the Bible says. If we search the Scriptures for ourselves, the Holy Spirit will lead us to understand what is right, true, and holy. People who teach and say wrong things about God will not be able to deceive us.
